Lies Of P: 11 Questions We Have After Completing The Game

The ending of Lies of P makes you wonder a lot and sets up a possible sequel.

Lies of P is a Souls-like game with a stronger storyline. It stays true to the model that FromSoftware mastered and also changes the story of Pinocchio. Still, you might have some questions after reading the story because it changes some parts of Carlo Collodi’s “The Adventures of Pinocchio.” Or maybe you just have ideas about what might happen next.

Neowiz’s idea of a Pinocchio Soulslike doesn’t really end in the way you’d expect from a fairy tale Pinocchio movie. There are a lot of unknowns, shocking turns and revelations, and things that will need more thought long after the movie is over. These could be some of those.

Who Is The Enigmatic Paracelsus?

Paracelsus sitting at a dining table on a train car wearing a dark gray suit and hat speaking to an unknown character on the phone.

In Lies of P, there is a scene after the credits that introduces a new character whose name is on the Uroboros’s Eye weapon that you can get from Alidoro but isn’t addressed in the main story. You can’t see his face, but he’s on the phone with an unknown woman in a different train car. It becomes clear that they were the ones who planned the “Krat experiment.” You do learn his name, though: Paracelsus.

It looks like Neowiz is adding a real historical person to the dark fantasy story with a twist about living forever. Paracelsus was a Swiss doctor and scientist who lived from 1493 to 1541. He is known as the “father of chemistry” and “toxicology.” The story of Lies of P takes place during the Belle Époque period, which ran from about 1871 to 1914. That means he is about 400 years old. It looks like Simon Manus wasn’t really in charge after all.

Are We Going To Oz Or Staying In Krat?

A tease of Dorothy on a rooftop in Krat tapping the ruby slippers together during the post-credit cutscene in Lies Of P.

From the scene after the credits, everyone probably had another exciting and important question: Are we going to see the Wizard, the wonderful Wizard of Oz? Because at the end of that talk between Paracelsus and his assistant, he promised to find another key to their goal of endless life before the next meeting of alchemists, which is where Dorothy comes in.

Right after this shocking reveal, there is a surprise preview of Dorothy wearing her ruby shoes and walking along a rooftop in Krat. She taps the heel three times, and the scene fades to black. Is Dorothy going back to Kansas via teleportation or to Neowiz’s dark version of Oz? We hope we don’t have to wait too long to find out.

Why Was Geppetto The Villain In The Story?

Split-image of Geppetto feeling happy and satisfied after having Carlo back and Pinocchio lying dead on the ground as Geppetto revives Carlo.

Geppetto was a kind old man who cared for Pinocchio like a son. In some movie versions, he mourned the death of a son and found love again with Pinocchio. By the end of Lies of P‘s story, Geppetto had become the exact opposite of what he seemed to be. That man was bad, selfish, and sneaky. He planned to kill Pinocchio and then have his son kill someone after he came back to life.

Geppetto lies to Pinocchio about needing your heart to bring his son back to life instead of the Ergo you bring from defeating Manus, which is what he really wants. He hates you so much that if you say no, he will make you fight the Nameless Puppet boss. It takes the evil twist on Pinocchio’s story even further, but it doesn’t stay true to Geppetto’s character in the book.

Where Was The Terrible Dogfish?

Split-image of Monstro from the 2022 live-action movie, and the original Monstro from the animated Disney movie - both rising out from the water.

Many references to Collodi’s “The Adventures of Pinocchio” can be found in the story. However, the Terrible Dogfish that takes Geppetto’s boat and keeps him from Pinocchio for a large part of the story seems to be missing. In the Disney movie, this figure played Monstro, a huge sperm whale, and in the 2022 del Toro movie, he played a scarier monster that was more true to the story.

The big submarine that takes Pinocchio to the Isle of Alchemists shoots out of the water like Monstro and has teeth that look like sharks’. However, it looks more like a shark submarine. The Terrible Dogfish, like the Green Monster of the Swamp, could have been a great alternative boss that could have been found on the shore or in the water.

Why Is The Best Ending To Pinocchio’s Story Earned By Lying?

Pinocchio holding Geppetto in his arms as he lays dying, telling him:

‘Rise of P.’ is the name of what is probably the most beautiful and satisfying finish in the game. In this ending, Geppetto still makes you face the Nameless Puppet when you refuse to give up Pinocchio’s heart. But he will understand what he did was wrong, and the boss will cut him down so you can die in P’s arms while he calls you son and says sorry. Finally, Pinocchio will give up his soul and give it to Sophia in the form of a doll. He will then die in her arms.

It’s the least dark, most hopeful, and most moving finish Lies of P has to offer, but getting it seems like the wrong thing to do. With your character, you can never tell the truth, and you have to lie every time you have to make a choice. The lesson of the story is that lying is wrong, so Pinocchio should always tell the truth from now on, but Lies of P‘s version seems to say something different.

Will Sophia Return?

The new doll form of Sophia coming to life and holding the deceased Pinocchio in her arms.

It might be harder to answer this question because the three ends are so different. There is a blue butterfly spirit inside Sophia, which keeps her living if you get the Rise of P ending. This ending isn’t given to you, though. That means that either her Fairy form is dead because she was already dying in Simon Manus’ house from the Ergo mutation, or you decided to “give her peace.”

Sophia is in that picture, so Pinocchio moves to the toy version of her to bring her to life. Pinocchio must still be living at the end and have chosen to “give her peace” for her doll form to exist. This new form of Sophia would be a fun character to play as in a DLC, or she could even show up in the next part of Dorothy’s story.

Why Does Carlo Need Pinocchio’s Heart?

Carlo walking out of Hotel Krat toward Geppetto with blood on his face.

The ending of “Real Boy,” on the other hand, makes you wonder a lot more. This is the one where you give up your heart to Geppetto, and he gets to see his son Carlo again. However, why would a person need a doll’s heart to live in the first place? There were also hints of this before the fight with the King of Puppets in the Opera House.

Geppetto taking out Pinocchio’s heart and putting it in a new doll that wakes up and feels alive was shown with puppets, which foreshadowed this very moment and Geppetto’s evil plans. So Carlo is also a doll, right? Also, why did Carlo and the Nameless Puppet come out of the same trunk?

What Was Pinocchio’s Body Doing In Krat Central Station?

Lies of P, Beginner's Guide Featured Image

For the most part, Pinocchio’s story starts with him at Geppetto’s desk at home. He is never too far away or out of sight of the toy maker. Things change a lot in Lies of P. Pinocchio is left alone in a train car at Krat Central Station until the Blue Fairy comes to life.

Straight ahead is Gemini, the cricket leader. But Geppetto doesn’t show up until Doodle Cricket is already well under way. If Pinocchio weren’t in a train station, you would think he would be in a doll factory or workshop. The train station doesn’t have much to do with the story other than being a setting. Did he come into being on the train? Who put him there in the middle of all the puppet chaos?

Is The Puppet Language Even Readable At All?

You might have had this one too. Figuring out what the tough bosses in Lies of P are saying in battle is the second most annoying thing, after dying over and over again to them. Their speech sounds like a slurred puppet, and the words are hard to read. At first, they might not even seem English.

What I thought were words in English are actually in English, but they are very jumbled and hard to understand on purpose. You might have to find a movie to pause and squint really hard to read it, or you could look it up online. Some of the information might be very important to the story, like how Romeo’s family lived, and you’ll miss it during the fight.

Why Wasn’t Petrification Disease As Original As The Rest Of The Game?

Manus revealing himself as his new grotesque mutated boss form to Pinocchio in Lies of P.

Finding out the story behind blue Ergo and the Petrification Disease that destroyed Krat was the most exciting thing for everyone. The twist, on the other hand, didn’t really add anything new or interesting to the story. Instead, it was just another tired plot point that was lifted from The Callisto Protocol and Resident Evil.

All of these Ergo-mutated people around Krat are trials to speed up human evolution and give you a stronger body to become a stronger version of yourself, as the boss Champion Victor hints at in his intro and Simon Manus goes into more detail in a speech after the fight. It’s the same reason Warden Cole gave for the Biophages in The Callisto Protocol. When the whole idea of the game is so original, why wasn’t the answer more original?

What Was Krat Like Before The Puppet Frenzy?

A still from the opening credit sequence in Lies of P, with a female character and her butler doll looking up at a tram car in the sky.

It’s kind of shown in the beginning scenes, but it would be cool to see what Krat was like before the Petrification Disease killed everyone and the bad robots went on the rampage. The events in Krat are similar to those in BioShock. Because of ADAM, the beautifully realized underwater dystopia of Rapture falls to Splicers.

Some of the enemies and minibosses you can see are the milkman, butlers with candelabras, circus artists, and traffic cops with stop and go signs. Puppets also helped load big things and taught people how to play the piano. It’s also interesting to think about whether there were ever real dogs in Krat, since the hotel had a cat.
